Catholic church to host programs
Pope John Paul II Catholic Church, 353 South Pagosa Blvd. in Pagosa Springs, will host “Overcoming Fear with FAITH,” an area-wide renewal week with Brendan Case, from Monday to Thursday.
The week will feature “School of the Spiritual Life” from 8:30 to 10 a.m.; “Discipleship Week,” for teens in sixth to 12th grades, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and evening adoration and message from 7 to 9 p.m.

Buddhist teacher, author to lead retreat
Buddhist teacher and best-selling author Lama Surya Das will lead a retreat from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Durango Dharma Center, 2530 Colorado Ave.
The program will be based on themes from Lama Surya’s book Awakening the Buddha Within. The cost for the retreat is on a sliding scale from $40 to $70 per person. Students may register for $30. Surya Das also will speak from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 4 at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College. The event will include book signing and sales, a silent auction and Lama Surya’s presentation on “Buddha Standard Time,” which is the title of his latest book. Sacred Heart to host Bible school
Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 254 East Fifth Ave., will host Vacation Bible School from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from Monday to Friday.
All children ages 5 to 12 are welcome, and there is no charge.

Har Shalom to host programs
Congregation Har Shalom, 2537 County Road 203, will host these programs:
Shabbat morning service will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today in synagogue. The service will be led by Eli Herb. Participants may bring lunch foods to share.
Avodat Lev, Service of the Heart, will be held from 6:15 to 7 a.m. Wednesday.
Kabbalat Shabbat and Oneg will take place from 7 to 7:20 p.m. Friday. The service will be led by Eli Herb.
“Come and Hear, Go and See” will be held from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Friday. Participants will learn how storytelling and the oral tradition are a revered spiritual discipline amongst Jews in the modern era and how the European persecution of Jews of the 18th-20th centuries altered the nature of the oral tradition.
