Turkey Federation to host JAKES Day event

The La Plata County chapter of the Wild Turkey Federation will host JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge Ethics and Sportsmanship) Day starting at 9 a.m. Sept. 29 at Robinson Game Birds Farm.

To get to the farm travel north on County Road 234 for two miles and then travel west on County Road 235 to the end of the road. There will be signs. The program is part of a nationwide program by the federation that teaches youths safe gun handling, skeet shooting, target shooting and live turkey hunting. Lunch will be served. The free event is open to youths younger than 17.

CDOT to resurface frontage road in Bodo

Colorado Department of Transportation maintenance crews will resurface the west-side frontage road through Bodo Industrial Park from County Road 210 to Turner Drive from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.

Drivers will encounter single-lane, alternating traffic along the frontage road; there will be access to all businesses, but some accesses will be temporarily altered.

Cancer prevention with herbs discussed

Herbalist Marija Helt will offer the free class “Cancer: Preventative Work Through Herbs, Diet and Lifestyle” from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Durango.

Contributing factors to developing cancer include diet, environment, lifestyle and genetics. Participants will discuss risk reduction based on scientific research and traditional herbal knowledge.

Helt earned her doctorate studying papillomavirus and cervical cancer and also worked in cancer-drug pharmacology before becoming an herbalist. Space is limited.

Liberty Restoration to present speaker

The 4-Corners Liberty Restoration Group will listen to world-renowned speaker and political activist Trevor Loudon from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

Loudon will speak about his new book Barack Obama and The Enemy Within, which is a history about people who advise, mentor and operate behind the president.
