Insurance, financial advisers meet today

The National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors-Southwestern Colorado will meet at noon today in Room 1 of Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave

The guest speaker will be Steve Thomas, who will present The Personal Economic Flow Model, which is designed to enhance an adviser’s ability to communicate to clients the affects on cash flow depending on spending decisions.

The meeting is free for members and $20 for guests, which includes lunch and a one-hour credit.

Educational testing firm opens in Durango

Susan Schaldach has opened Academic Insights of Durango, an independent, small business that provides timely, accurate and professional Independent Educational Evaluations for students of all ages.

The Independent Educational Evaluation is a private evaluation performed by experienced, qualified personnel outside of the school system. It provides a detailed view of a student’s unique learning style and educational needs. The test gives a parent an understanding a child’s cognitive abilities and academic strengths and weaknesses. A clear interpretation of the results leads to educational recommendations including specific instructional suggestions, remediation and accommodations.

Schaldach has a master’s degree in special education, and she has more than 30 years of experience as an educator with the Durango public school system.

Sunshine Gardens announces new hire

Sunshine Gardens Outpatient Rehab Department announces the addition of occupational therapist Amy Bourdon.

Bourdon has more than 20 years of experience with the senior population. Her experience includes work in home care, skilled nursing facilities and outpatient settings. With the senior citizen population, she emphasizes safety, fall-prevention and maximizing independence in activities of daily living. Her work also can assist people struggling with pain, arthritis, weakness and decreased strength.

A meet-and-greet for Bourdon will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at Sunshine Gardens, 25 Sunshine Court, for residents, family members, and community members.

Architect recognized for green-building skills

Responsive Designs, Architects announces the accreditation of Connie L. Gordon as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Associate, an industry recognition of high green building standards.

U.S. Dept. of Agriculture meeting set for Oct. 22

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Colorado Farm Service Agency Natural Resources Conservation Service and Rural Development State Office Management will hold a public meeting at 2 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Exhibit Hall at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. The meeting will provide an update on the Farm Service Agency and Natural Resources Conservation Service programs. It also will discuss the Hispanic and Women Farmer and Rancher Claims Process.

The Durango Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for the 2012 Durango Rocks awards.

Nominations are sought for Citizen of the Year, Entrepreneur of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Small Business of the Year, Morley Ballantine Award, Business of the Year, Nonprofit of the Year, Barbara Conrad Award and YPOD of the year.

Candidate forum to be held Oct. 18

Durango Chamber of Commerce will host an Eggs & Issues breakfast featuring the county commissioner candidates at 8 a.m. Oct. 18 at the DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio.

The cost will be $15 for chamber members and $20 for nonmembers. The candidate’s forum will feature the four candidates running for La Plata County Commissioner: Harry Baxstrom, Kellie Hotter, Gwen Lachelt and Julie Westendorf. Reservations are required.
