St. Columba student wins essay contest

Finn Stowers, a sixth-grade student at St. Columba School, recently received top honors in the Catholic Daughters of the Americas national essay contest.

Students from fourth through sixth grade were eligible. Finn’s essay, following the theme “Planting the Seeds of Faith,” was awarded first place by local judges, qualifying it for the Colorado state essay contest.

After receiving first place at the state level, the essay was sent to the national contest, where he received first place and a check for $100.

Finn is the son of Mick and Bridget Stowers of Durango.

Har Shalom to host Hanukah celebration

Congregation Har Shalom will host a First Night of Hanukah Festival from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 8.

“Modern and Ancient Israeli Hanukah” will be held at 6 p.m. A Hanukah bonfire will be held outside, with a gathering for blessings and sharing. People should bring their menorah, candles and latkes to share. Catered side dishes and soufganiot (jelly doughnuts) will be provided, A $15 freewill offering is suggested.

The event will feature Hanukah stories and discussion, spielen dreydl (games for children), and Hanukah gelt and prizes will be provided. People may bring any kosher style (dairy/vegetarian) food or dessert items to add to the festivities. Volunteers are needed to meet and greet, help set up, serve, clean up and put away tables and chairs.
