No. 2 UConn spoils No. 1 Stanford’s 82-game streak

STANFORD, Calif. – Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and second-ranked Connecticut played spoiler and streak-buster this time, snapping No. 1 Stanford’s nation-leading 82-game home unbeaten run with a surprisingly easy 61-35 rout Saturday.

It was the Huskies who saw the end of their NCAA record 90-game winning streak at Maples Pavilion with a 71-59 loss two years ago almost to the day on Dec. 30.

Mosqueda-Lewis scored 19 points as UConn (11-0) thoroughly outplayed Stanford (11-1) on both ends of the floor in this highly touted game featuring the country’s top programs and Final Four regulars from opposite coasts.

Chiney Ogwumike had 18 points and 13 rebounds as Stanford lost at Maples Pavilion for the first time since March 2007.

Sean Payton and the Saints to remain together

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Saints and suspended coach Sean Payton agreed in principle to a multiyear contract extension, according to two people familiar with the deal.

The people told The Associated Press about the deal Friday night on condition of anonymity because it hasn’t been signed, and final details regarding the length of the contract and financial compensation are still being worked out.

Payton signed an extension in 2011 that would have kept him in New Orleans through 2015, but NFL commissioner Goodell objected to certain language in that deal, leaving Payton’s future uncertain until the deal was reached Friday. The language in question in the previous extension gave Payton the right to opt out early if general manager Mickey Loomis left the club for any reason.

Payton is 62-34 in regular-season games as Saints head coach and 5-3 in the postseason.

No dealin’, just talkin’ about the NHL’s new proposal

NEW YORK – The NHL and the players’ association are spending lots of time talking but not negotiating yet.

One day after it was revealed that the NHL made a new contract offer to the union, the sides spent much of Saturday taking part in conference calls. The talks strictly were on an informational level and not meant for bargaining purposes.

The players’ association has been going over the new proposal it received late Thursday. Calls were scheduled for Saturday so the union could ask questions of league officials regarding the offer that is about 300 pages in length.

Almagro, a late replacement at the tournament for Rafael Nadal, rallied from 3-1 down in the tiebreaker to take the first set.
