Smith set for local meet-and-greet

New Fort Lewis College football coach will be part of today’s event

For those waiting for the opportunity to meet John L. Smith, today is your chance.

The brand new Fort Lewis College head football coach will be one of several FLC head coaches appearing at a reception from 5-7 p.m. today at the College Union Ballroom on campus.

Smith isn’t set to assume his duties until March 1, but he’ll be in Durango in order to meet players and members of the current coaching staff.

The new Skyhawks’ boss was hired Jan. 16 after not being retained at Arkansas after one season at the helm of the Razorbacks. He’s been head coach of Idaho, Utah State, Louisville, Michigan State and Weber State, as well, and he earned Big Ten Coach of the Year honors at Michigan State in 2003 and led his teams to six conference titles, among other accomplishments.

He’ll be joined by men’s basketball coach Bob Hofman, women’s basketball coach Jason Flores, softball coach Kira Zeiter, lacrosse coach Kelsey MacDonald and volleyball coach Shelly Aaland, who all will speak in turn about upcoming games and events before fans have an opportunity for a meet-and-greet session with all the coaches.

The event is free and open to the public and will take the place of the regular Wednesday coaches’ chat for the final week of January. Free appetizers and a cash bar will be provided.

RSVPs are encouraged. To RSVP, contact assistant director of athletics for development Wayne Barger at 247-7576 or at RSVPs received via email are eligible for a monthly drawing for a $25 gift card to a local restaurant.
