Students participate in competition

The 2013 Colorado SkillsUSA District 8 competitions were held March 1 at Durango High School.

Contests in Skilled, Leadership, and Service Oriented Careers took place involving contestants from Bayfield, Durango and Pagosa Springs high schools. The top finishers qualify for the Colorado SkillsUSA State Championships in Golden on April 17, 18 and 19. These are the competitors:

Advertising Design: First place Eva Eckstein of Durango and second place Madison Hoven of Durango.

Architectural Design: First place Taylor Lirot of Bayfield and second place Garret Marr of Bayfield.

Automotive Service Technology: First place Jacob Fortney of Pagosa Springs and second place Zack Leewitt of Pagosa Springs.

Cabinetmaking: First place Joshua Langford of Durango, second place Kenai Duran of Bayfield and third place Luke Hedges of Bayfield.

Carpentry: First place Trevor Bisbee of Durango and second place Ian Hermans of Bayfield.

Computer Programming: First place Isaiah Thompson of Pagosa Springs and second place Jesse Richardson of Pagosa Springs.

Crime Scene Investigation: First place Alexa Alexander, Cody Couch and Wes Schoneman all of Pagosa Springs.

Photography: First place Megan Davey of Pagosa Springs, second place Daniel McDermott of Durango and third place Chanel McCloskey of Bayfield.

Quiz Bowl: First place Taylor Lirot, Garett Marr, Chanel McCloskey, Travis Buress and Kenni Duran all of Bayfield.

Technical Drafting: First place: Travis Buress of Bayfield.

Welding: First place Tyler Beebe of Bayfield and second place Rowdy Pittman of Durango.

SkillsUSA, formerly Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, has been a national organization for secondary and college students since the 1920s.

Local students named to university honor roll

These local students have been named to the University of Dallas, located in Irving, Texas, Honor Roll for the fall 2012 semester for earning a semester GPA of 3.0 to 3.49:

Hannah Hwang to appear in magazine

Photographer’s Forum magazine announces that Hannah Hwang, a senior at Durango High School, was selected as a finalist in its 33rd annual College and High School Photography Contest.

Hwang’s photograph will be published in Photographer’s Forum’s Best of College and High School Photography 2013.

Durango FFA students attend contest

Durango High School FFA attended the district speaking contest March 7 and these are the results:

Gold Speakers, who will continue to state convention: Skkye Moreno for prepared speaking and Ashley Little for extemporaneous speaking.

Gold level speakers: Shaylan Garrett for FFA Creed.

Silver level speakers: Reyetta Hubbs for extemporaneous, Logan Garrett for prepared and Shantell Smith for prepared.

Bronze level speakers: Bre Hawman for FFA Creed and Kaniesha Valley for FFA Creed.
