Back from Russia, with love

Tracy, left, and Lanny Barnes will appear at a fundraiser Saturday night.

After a whirlwind couple of months that saw them garner worldwide attention, Lanny and Tracy Barnes are back in Durango; and on Saturday, they’ll make a public appearance at the Irish Embassy Pub.

The twin biathletes will be signing autographs from 7 to 9 p.m. to raise money for the Boys & Girls Club and the Durango Winter Sports Foundation. A raffle with $5 tickets will be held for various prizes, including a snowboard. Proceeds from that, plus 5 percent of bar sales, will go to the two organizations.

The twins made headlines in January, when Tracy Barnes qualified for the U.S. Olympic team and declined her spot, freeing it for Lanny, who was next in line. The act of valor landed them on national TV and in publications around the world. Lanny Barnes competed in February at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, with Tracy cheering from the sidelines.

Tracy is married to Gary Colliander, head coach of the Durango Nordic Ski Club, which, along with the Purgatory freestyle, alpine and snowboard teams, is part of the sports foundation.

The caption in an earlier version of this story gave the wrong date for the fundraiser. It is Saturday.
