Two local men seriously hurt on Florida Road

Alcohol suspected in head-on collision

Two Durango men were seriously injured Wednesday evening in a head-on accident on Florida Road.

Brian Strittmatter, 29, and Mark “Downtown Steve” Brown, 60, were transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. Both were listed in fair condition Thursday night, Mercy spokesman David Bruzzese said.

According to Durango Police Department Sgt. Rita Warfield, the police got the call about 8:35 p.m. Wednesday.

Strittmatter was headed toward town in a white 2002 Subaru when he drove across the median near the eastern end of Chapman Hill and into the oncoming lane, she said. As he came into the lane, he hit Brown’s 1993 blue Nissan truck, causing major damage to both vehicles.

“Alcohol is suspected in Mr. Strittmatter’s case,” she said. “It’s still under investigation, but there is the potential for both (driving under the influence) and vehicular assault charges.”

Investigators are not estimating the speeds involved yet because they still are working on the road and checking the tires, she said. Warfield also noted that the speed on Strittmatter’s side of the road was reduced from 35 to 30 mph right about where the accident occurred.

“Once they determine the extent of the injuries and get the tests back with the level of alcohol results, they’ll decide what citations to issue,” she said. “They also haven’t issued any yet because both men are still in the hospital.”

Strittmatter and Brown were wearing their seat belts, and both were the only occupants in their vehicles, she said.

Police expect to know more early next week.
