10-month-old heart patient needs to feel your love

Fundraiser for kiddo to help pay for his hospital costs

The Children’s Organ Transplant Association has scheduled a fundraiser Sept. 20 for Durango-born Liam Maddox, who at age 5 months in April received a new heart at the Seattle Children’s Hospital.

Liam continues to recover, with return visits to Seattle down to once a month. Liam is the son of Paul Maddox and Jacquelyn Wright and the grandson of Eileen and Darrell Maddox of Durango. The grandparents head the Durango Volunteers of Liam’s Heart Club, which is coordinating the Children’s Organ Transplant Association campaign.

The fundraiser, known as Heartfest, 2014 is a silent auction that will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Powerhouse Science Center. Among items for auction are a Colorado Rockies jersey and lift tickets for Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort

A run/walk along the Animas River Trail is set for 9 a.m. the morning of the auction.

Tickets for the walk/run are $15 for adults and $10 for children ages 6 to 12. Admission to the auction is $25 for adults and $15 for children. Both can be had for a discount at $35 and $15, respectively.

Darrell Maddox said that all money raised locally will go to the family. Tickets can be purchase at Maria’s Bookshop, 960 Main Ave., at liamsheartclub@yahoo.com or by calling Eileen Maddox at 903-4796. Donations also may be made at http://cotaforliamm.com through the Children’s Organ Transplant Association.

Liam’s condition stemmed from an enlarged and weakened heart that couldn’t pump blood.
