La Plata County had a robust schedule of debates and forums for local offices, but the gubernatorial events all took place on the Front Range. And even televised debates didn’t reach us because Southwest Colorado doesn’t receive Denver television broadcasts.
So the city of Durango is doing something about that. It’s going to air the Arvada Chamber of Commerce Gubernatorial Forum featuring all six candidates from now through Nov. 3.
“The city tries to support civic involvement,” said Sherri Dugdale, assistant to the city manager. “We’re part of a cooperative of government-access channels. We can pick up debates filmed in other council chambers that are set up like we are.”
The debate features incumbent Democrat Gov. John Hickenlooper, Republican Bob Beauprez, Green Party candidate Harry Hempy, Libertarian candidate Matthew Hess and unaffiliated candidates Mike Dunafon and Paul Noel Fiorino.
Is the city going to air a debate featuring senatorial candidates Mark Udall and Cory Gardner?
“If we can find one that’s available to us that was recorded like this or can come on a DVD, absolutely,” Dugdale said. “But it has to be nonpartisan.”
