Coroner Jann Smith confirmed Tuesday she responded to a death that was an apparent suicide.
“We’ll do an autopsy (Wednesday) to confirm it,” she said.
Smith said the deceased was a woman in her early 30s, but she could not release more information Tuesday afternoon.
Dan Bender with the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office said deputies received a call at 12:58 p.m. Monday and responded to a scene in the 21000 block of U.S. Highway 160, where they found the body of an adult female.
“A handgun was recovered, and the woman had suffered a gunshot wound,” he said.
“No foul play is indicated at this point.”
Bender, the spokesman for the department, said deputies still were on scene at 3:30 p.m., and the family had not been identified.
