Former Southern Ute chairman honored

Newton

La Plata County commissioners honored Jimmy R. Newton Jr., a former chairman of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe, by commemoratively naming County Road 322 in his honor.

Newton died March 31, 2014, after serving as the youngest person to be elected chairman of the tribe.

“The naming of the road, that is going to mean a lot to the people of La Plata County, the people of the Southern Ute Tribe and the visitors,” said James M. Olguin, a member of the Tribal Council.

Newton served on the Tribal Council for more than 10 years, and his friend Amy Barry recalled his public service Tuesday.

“He truly believed in intergovernmental relationships being positive, and this is a clear example of that today (Tuesday),” said Barry, a member of the Southern Ute Tribal Council.

The signs commemoratively naming the road after Newton will be posted during a ceremony at 1 p.m. April 21 at Colorado Highway 172 and County Road 322.
