A former Fort Lewis College football player has been arrested in connection with an armed robbery last month at an ATM at the Bank of the San Juans in Durango.
Maurice Anderson, 30, was arrested Friday evening at the Sky Ute Casino in Ignacio on suspicion of felony robbery and assault, according to a news release from the Durango Police Department. He was released the next day on $25,000 bail.
Anderson played as wide receiver for the Skyhawks in 2013 and 2014. Originally from Mobile, Alabama, Anderson played at Auburn University from 2003 to 2005. He majored in exercise science at Fort Lewis, according to an FLC Athletics website.
He is not on the Skyhawks’ 2015 roster. Anderson was a registered student during spring semester, but he is not registered for summer or fall semester, FLC spokesman Mitch Davis said. Anderson has not graduated.
Anderson, who lives in the 1800 block of Florida Road, is suspected of attacking an ATM user from behind while wielding a knife. He stabbed the ATM user in the chin and took the customer’s money before fleeing in a white Toyota Prius.
The victim was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center to be treated for the stab wound. He received stitches, but the wound was minor and not life-threatening, Durango police spokesman Ray Shupe said in an earlier interview.
The robbery occurred about 5 p.m. April 21 outside the bank’s downtown location at 144 E. Eighth St.
An ATM camera recorded the suspect wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, gloves, sunglasses and a scarf covering his face.
