Durango senior golfers slay Black Canyon

Durango boys golf 4th in Montrose

Cy Spicer and Eric Walker had their golf game in fine shape Tuesday.

The two seniors led the Durango High School golf team to a fourth-place finish at Black Canyon Golf Course in Montrose. Spicer shot a 3-over-par 73, and Walker finished at 5-over 75.

“Cy had a pretty solid day all around. There was a couple of three putts in there, but when he needed a good bounce he got it,” DHS head coach Kirk Rawles said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “Eric had three birdies and was 1 under at one point late in the round. To shoot 75 with a triple bogey on the card is really solid.”

The Demons finished with a team score of 228, one behind third-place Montrose. Steamboat Springs, another Class 4A regional rival of Durango, won the meet with 220. Fruita Monument took second with 225, led by Troy Dangler’s 3-under 67. He was the tournament champion.

Rounding out the Demons’ varsity was Cameron Barnhardt and Lucas Robbins, who each shot 80. Cory Gillespie finished with an 85.

The Demons’ junior varsity team had a standout performance from senior Blake Martin, who broke 80 for the first time in a competitive round with a 79.

Kobe Szura shot 87, Robby Grogan signed for a 91, and Kyle Pritchard shot 92.

Freshman Caleb Newman competed in his first high school tournament for DHS and finished with a 98.

The Demons will see a tougher test Wednesday in Montrose at Bridges Golf Club, a Jack Nicklaus designed course.

“It will be a good test for most of these guys,” Rawles said. “Not nearly as wide open as what they played (Tuesday).”
