Upper Pine, Durango Fire respond to playhouse blaze

Firefighters responded to a fire Friday afternoon that burned one playhouse to the ground and scorched another.

Upper Pine Fire Protection District initially received the call around 4:20 p.m. to the 200 block of Toad Road, north of U.S. Highway 160 just east of the intersection with County Road 225A.

Upper Pine Chief Bruce Evans said his agency requested mutual aid from the Durango Fire Protection District, which responded with one engine.

“The playhouse was one of those plastic ones, and it melted the whole thing down to the ground,” Evans said. “There were a bunch of those little play cars around it, and they were destroyed, too.”

The fire scorched a wooden playhouse nearby, he said, but the crews were able to save it. The nearby residence was not damaged.

“We’re still investigating the cause,” Evans said. “Some of those little cars have batteries, but we don’t know if it had anything to do with those. A fire investigator will be interviewing a small kid (Saturday).”
