Snowstorm should leave its mark in Durango, Southwest Colorado

Silverton could see 16 inches Monday

Southwest Colorado is not expected to be spared a major storm hitting most of the West beginning Sunday night and continuing through Monday.

The National Weather Service expects Sunday night’s rain to turn to snow in Southwest Colorado on Monday, with Durango forecasted to receive an 80 percent chance of snow on Monday.

Monday’s high temperature in Durango is expected to reach only 34 degrees with a low of 21.

The weather service expects 3 to 5 inches of accumulation in Durango by the time the storm ends Monday night.

Tuesday should be mostly sunny in Durango with a high of 37 and a low of 18.

Silverton is under a winter storm warning through Monday night with a 20 percent chance of snow extending into Tuesday. Up to 16 inches of snow is expected to fall in Silverton.

In Denver, the snowstorm could foul Tuesday morning commuter traffic

A fast-moving snowstorm is expected to dump up to 6 inches on the Denver-metro area starting Monday evening, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder.

The snow should end Tuesday morning.

“It is going to be moving out pretty quickly,” said Bob Kleyla, a weather service meteorologist.

Snow totals are expected to range from 2 to 6 inches in the Denver-metro area, 4 to 8 inches over the Eastern Plains, and 6 to 12 over the central mountains, Kleyla said.

Mild weather will return to the Denver area Wednesday, with sunny skies and a high in Denver of 54 degrees. In Durango, Wednesday’s high is expected to reach only 33 degrees.
