A Durango man who suffered a single gunshot wound to the head was being kept alive Wednesday in an Albuquerque hospital so his organs could be donated.
The Durango Police Department is investigating the shooting that occurred about 1:35 a.m. at the End-O-Day Motel, 350 East Eighth Ave., said Lt. Ray Shupe, spokesman with the department.
Joshua Andrew Gonzales, 24, was airlifted to a hospital in Albuquerque in critical condition. He was shot in the head with a .22-caliber handgun.
Three people were inside the room at the time of the shooting, including Gonzales, Shupe said. He was unsure if Gonzales shot himself in the head or if one of the two men pulled the trigger. Either way, police suspect it was a suicide or an accident, he said.
No one was being held in police custody Wednesday night.
“We’re still sorting through interviews with the other two that were in there,” Shupe said. “At this point, we’re not looking for anyone. We don’t have anyone outstanding. We’re just trying to investigate exactly what happened.”
An autopsy is expected to reveal more about the incident, including the entry wound and trajectory of the bullet, he said. Police will use that information to determine if it matches witness statements and the evidence found inside the room.
