Training for nonprofit leaders to be offered

Fiscal responsibilities, marketing and fundraising on agenda
Wrinkle

When the Powerhouse Science Center closed abruptly for rebooting in May 2015, the community realized staff and boards at Durango’s more than 300 nonprofits needed more training to be sustainable in the post-recession era.

On Friday, the Community Foundation Serving Southwest Colorado and Community Resource Center are holding a day-long session called Essentials for Thriving Nonprofits to provide some of that training.

Offering a combination of local experts and representatives from the resource center and Colorado Nonprofit Association, the day will include topics such as financial management, board development, marketing and public relations and human resources.

The training is part of a long-term commitment to improve nonprofit management in Southwest Colorado, foundation Executive Director Briggen Wrinkle said.

A few highlights include creative ways to increase retention with Betsy Fitzpatrick, human resources director for StoneAge Inc.; nonprofit taxation with Michelle Saino of FredrickZink & Associates, and collaborative strategic planning led by Tami Graham, nonprofit facilitator and consultant.

The day will end with a panel of corporate philanthropists and community grant makers, who will discuss opportunities for funding through their organizations and explain their process for prioritizing requests. The panel will include Jen Simon from First National Bank, Jeannie Bennett from La Plata Electric Association, Mike Smedley from Bank of the San Juans, Julie Duvall of Parady Financial and Paige Elliott on behalf of the Ballantine Family Fund.

Preregistration is required.
