One down, two to go for Durango boys lacrosse

Demons take care of first task

The Durango Demons knew going into this week they needed three wins in three games in three days. One down, two to go.

Durango High School’s boys lacrosse team used a big fourth quarter to get past Glenwood Springs at home Thursday. Andrew Brown made five key saves, and the Demons hung on to win 13-10 to improve to 6-6 overall and 4-2 in the Mountain League.

“We were down three starters, too,” DHS head coach John Robinette said. “We had a shorter bench, but Oaken Oles, Cullen Robinette, Tommy Rodgers and the rest of the guys stepped up in a big way, and that was good to see.

“Brown had three saves going into the fourth quarter, but he really held onto the victory for us in that fourth quarter.”

Kyle Robinette scored five goals and scooped up a team-high eight ground balls. He now has 41 goals this season and leads the state with 99 ground balls.

Rodgers had six assists and one goal to lead the team in points. Oles had one of the best games of his career, as the senior had four goals and one assist and was a force all over the field.

Cullen Robinette had two assists, while Collin Barkley, Max Ickes and Ryan Smith all scored one goal each.

The Demons led 10-6 at halftime after trailing 1-0 and 2-1 early. A run of five consecutive goals in the second quarter gave the team breathing room.

But it was all Glenwood Springs in the third quarter, as two Durango penalties led to two goals for the visitors.

DHS was outshot 32-26 but won 36 ground balls to Glenwood’s 25. Easton Verduzco was 8-of-15 on faceoffs for DHS.

Friday will be senior day for Durango, as the Demons will host Grand Junction. DHS will close the regular season Saturday at Montrose.
