This Martin Luther King Day prompts me to write in protest of something that occurred several weeks ago. On two occasions, we saw a car and then a pickup truck racing around the library parking lot and then on North Main blatantly flying a Confederate flag. This universally understood symbol of racism has no place in our society, as even South Carolina now understands. It has been at long last removed from government buildings in that state.
MLK day celebrates an extraordinary man whose movement based on non-violence and love for all mankind spoke to our better angels. Much has been accomplished in the years since his assassination but this incident right here in Durango illustrates that the struggle against blind hatred continues.
May we have the fortitude to continue the fight and speak out against racism in any form.
