Heart Safe La Plata announces classes
Heart Safe La Plata will offer these first aid and adult CPR trainings:
Adult CPR/AED class will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday at the Durango Fire & Rescue Authority station in Bodo Industrial Park, 142 Sheppard Drive. The cost is $50 for a two-year certification.
CPR for health-care professionals will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Feb. 9. The cost is $65 for a two-year certification.
A combination class of adult CPR and basic first aid will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 23. The cost is $75.
Instructors are available to teach at businesses or service clubs. Heart Safe La Plata offers CPR training to the community on the first Thursday of each month.

Obesity epidemic talk to be held Wednesday
Mercy Regional Medical Center and Women’s Health Coalition will present “Understanding the Relationship of Carbohydrate Nutrition, Obesity, Diabetes and Heart Disease” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in Program Room 1 of the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.
This will be a scientific and political overview of the obesity epidemic and the effects on health-care spending; how dietary carbohydrates fuel disease; and how redefining healthy nutrition provides a solution. Dr. Jeff Gerber of South Suburban Family and Occupational Medicine in Denver will give the presentation. The event is free and refreshments will be served.
Women’s Health series continues Thursday
A free class called “Women’s Health – Menstrual Cycle Imbalances” will be offered by herbalist Marija Helt from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Zuke’s, 2257 Main Ave.
Participants will talk about nutrition and herbs for working with: cycle length, painful periods, lack of periods, lack of ovulation (including Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), flooding and spotting. This is the second class in an ongoing series for women’s health.

Acupuncture class to be held Feb. 6
The Durango Public Library will host a free lecture titled “Acupuncture: Basics of the Basics” from 7 to 8 p.m. Feb. 6 at 1900 East Third Ave.
Tyler Van Gemert, licensed acupuncturist and oriental medical practitioner, will teach the tools and skills of this nature-based Eastern medicine. A question-and-answer discussion will cover topics such as digestive health, pain-free living and increased fertility.
