Neighbors living near the site of a truck fire earlier this week in the Bondad area reported hearing what they thought were explosions.

“The tires on those trucks heat up enough so they pop quite loudly,” Deputy Chief Tom Aurnhammer of the Los Pinos Fire Protection District said Thursday of the incident, which occurred Monday. “But there were no actual explosions.”

Drivers had to take a detour around County Road 310 after a water tanker caught fire near Mile Marker 1. Firefighters closed the road because they needed room to stage responders to fight the blaze.

“The cab of the truck was totaled,” Aurnhammer said. “The tank and trailer were still intact. We notified Durango because it was in their call area.”

Five engines and tankers from Durango Fire & Rescue Authority and six from Los Pinos were on scene early Monday morning.

Aurnhammer said the road was closed for 30 to 45 minutes. No one was injured.

“We don’t know what caused the fire, but we’re sure there was no criminal intent,” he said. “We’re sure it’s an accidental fire.”
