Championships looming on the horizon

Bragging rights continue on our area courses as the Dalton Ranch Men’s Club Championship will be held August 15-16.

The field is limited to the first 80 players, and tee times will begin at 8:30 a.m. both days.

Then, August 22-23, it is the Ska Brewing-Hillcrest Men’s and Women’s Club Championships. There is a combined $1,000 prize purse along with an additional $250 added purse provided by the Hillcrest Pro Shop. The entry fee is $60 per person, which includes a dinner for the entrant. This is 36-holes of individual stroke play, and tee times will begin at 7:30 a.m. both days. Prizes will be awarded on both the gross and net side scoring.

The Dalton Ranch Junior and Women’s Club Championships were held this week and I will have complete results for you next week.

The annual Dudley Engle Memorial Golf Tournament, with proceeds going to the Durango Emblem Club toward its charitable endeavors, will be held August 15th at Hillcrest. If you would like to compete, or relax as Dudley would say, give Hillcrest a call at 247-1499.

The 2015 edition of The Bugler was held August 6-8 at Dalton Ranch Golf Club. This was a round-robin match play event, within flights, with the overall flight winners battling it out in a shootout at the end of regulation. The flights are named after scenic areas of Southwest Colorado, and the winner of the Animas Flight was the team of Sean Griswold and Bill Fortner, while the team of Micky Walsh and John Thrasher captured the Dolores Flight. Jerry Vandiver and Michael Thomas teamed to take the Electra Flight, while Danny Spangler and Jerry Buxton teamed to finish tops in the Haviland Flight. Robert Cox teamed with Steve Horne to take the Hermosa Flight, with Justin Starnes and Chris Stokes topping the La Plata Flight. Jon Lupia and teammate Cliff Kirkmyer captured the Lemon Flight, while Kevin Foreman and Richard Foreman teamed up to win the Molas Flight. The Piedra Flight was won by the team of Patrick Stiefel and Travis Bates, while the team of Larry Crawford and Steve League took the Vallecito Flight. Crawford and League were the last team standing and won the shootout portion of the event.
