Durango softball doubled up by Delta

Softball team continuing to learn

The Durango High School softball team had another learning experience Friday in Delta.

The Demons fell 17-7 and 20-2 in a doubleheader against Delta.

“Game 1 was actually a good game. If we were to eliminate that first inning, we would have been within earshot of winning,” DHS head coach Chelsea Rodriguez said in an email to The Durango Herald. “We struggled to adjust to their pitcher, who throws pretty quick for this region of Colorado.”

Cami Bisbee pitched a complete game in the first contest despite battling illness most of the week. Rodriguez said Lexy Unruh had great at-bats and showed a lot of maturity for a freshman.

Rodriguez said the score of Game 2 wasn’t pretty, but several players got to see the field and learn as the young group continues to develop. Danica Dudley saw time in the pitcher’s circle, and Shilo Gillen also pitched.

“Sometimes you have to struggle to get better, and this game was one of those times,” Rodriguez said. “Delta has a good squad with solid pitching and skilled hitters.

“I’m excited to get another chance against them next Friday, because I think they’ll be severely underestimating us. We know where we need to improve, and we are going to work hard to make those improvements this week.”
