Fort Lewis softball salvages one at Chadron State

Skyhawks split doubleheader, drop 3 of 4 to Eagles

It wasn’t the best weekend for Fort Lewis College softball, but the Skyhawks are leaving Nebraska with some momentum.

Chadron State swept the doubleheader with FLC on Saturday and throttled the Skyhawks 11-0 in Sunday’s first game. Fort Lewis (11-26, 8-16 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) bounced back in game two and won 5-3 to salvage something positive from an otherwise tough couple days with the Eagles.

FLC starting pitcher Olivia Goldberg was given a comfortable cushion early by the Skyhawks offense. After being shut out of game one by Chadron State ace Tayler Hall, FLC greeted Eagles’ game two starter Cierra Cosslett with four runs before she could record an out.

Missy Fundora started the hit parade with a single. Denae Fisher followed suit and Angelique Elemen provided the big punch with a two-run double. An Eagles errors allowed two more runs to score and the home team never recovered from the four-run first.

Goldberg took care of the rest as she went the distance in the game two win. The senior allowed two earned runs and seven hits, struck out three and walked one.

Fundora finished the game 3-for-4 with a stolen base and two runs scored. Jeovanna Rios was also 3-for-4 with an RBI and Elemen was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

The win was a nice rebound after a poor start to the day for the Skyhawks.

Chadron State (21-15-1, 15-9 RMAC) wasted no time in picking up where it left off the day before with six runs in the first two innings off FLC ace Victoria Johnson.

While Johnson struggled early, Chadron State’s Tayler Hall was sharp in the circle for the second day in a row. Hall allowed just two hits in Saturday’s game one Eagles win, and she was even better on Sunday.

Robyn Young’s second inning single was the lone hit for Fort Lewis this time around off Hall, who is second in the RMAC with 12 wins after claiming the victory in the five inning, 11-0 blowout.

The Skyhawks will try to build off the positive game two performance with a noon doubleheader against Western New Mexico at Fort Lewis College’s Aspen Field.
