21-year-old Durango woman killed in U.S. Highway 550 crash

Vehicle went off road around 10:30 p.m. Friday

A 21-year-old woman from Durango was killed about 10:30 p.m. Friday when her vehicle went off the road after attempting a pass in traffic.

Colorado State Patrol Capt. Adrian Driscoll said Elizabeth Bennett’s 2020 Honda Civic went off U.S. Highway 550 at milepost 37, just south of Tamarron.

Bennett, who was southbound, appeared to have re-entered southbound traffic after attempting to pass vehicles and went off the right side of the road and collided with an embankment.

Bennett was not ejected from the vehicle, although she was not wearing a seat belt, Driscoll said.

Alcohol is suspected to have played a contributing factor in the crash, Driscoll said. He said excessive speed did not appear to be a factor.

La Plata County Coroner Jann Smith said an autopsy determined Bennett’s cause of death to be blunt force trauma. Toxicology results are expected to be completed in four weeks, she said.

Bennett was living in Durango, and her vehicle was registered in Arizona, Driscoll said.

Driscoll had no other details about the crash.
