30 acres burning between Bayfield, Pagosa

Two U.S. Forest Service roads were closed Thursday morning on the San Juan National Forest in association with the Little Devil Fire, then estimated at 30-plus acres. It was 10 percent contained on Thursday morning. The fire is burning in a remote area of the San Juan National Forest three miles north of the intersection of U.S. Highway 160 and Colorado State Highway 151 between Pagosa Springs and Bayfield. Both Forest Road #627, Devil Mountain Road, and Forest Road #626, which accesses the Devil Creek State Wildlife Area, were closed until further notice.

The fire was reported at 2:16 p.m. Tuesday and was caused by lightning. Twenty-eight firefighters, two air tankers and a helicopter are working the fire. A heavy air tanker, eight smokejumpers and another 20-person crew are ordered. Smoke is visible from U.S. Highway 160 and nearby areas, but no structures are threatened. A one-acre fire in Cox Canyon on the Southern Ute Indian Reservation had been contained Thursday morning. The 200-acre Navajo River Fire, burning east of Chama, NM, was 20 percent contained at that time. For more information on that fire, call (575) 759-3963.
