5K at Purgatory to benefit dog shelter

The inaugural Mutt ’n’ Strut Family 5K, a benefit for Annie’s Orphans, will be held Saturday at Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m. The run will start at 10 a.m. and is for people of all ages and their four-legged friends. The $15 registration fee comes with a dog bandana.

Annie’s Orphans is a no-kill animal shelter and adoption center near Durango. It is the oldest in the Four Corners.

After the run, Eric Melvin and 7-year-old Angelyne, the “amazing deaf cattle dog,” will give a presentation. The pair will demonstrate the relationship between a man and his special-needs dog, with the hope of encouraging owners to never give up on their pets.

Finishing off the event will be the Family Pet Parade at noon, and costumes worn by owners and pets are encouraged by event organizers.

Prizes will be awarded for best time, best costume, best owner-dog look-alike and best trick, said Sara Bath of Durango Mountain Resort.

Prizes for the event come from DMR, Pet Haus and the Durango Tourism Office.
