64 people in Durango didn’t ‘Click It’

The Durango Police Department cited 64 drivers in 14 days for not wearing seat belts, the city announced Friday.

The crackdown occurred during the “Click It or Ticket” campaign May 20 through June 2. Law enforcement agencies throughout Colorado participated in the nationwide annual effort to get more drivers to buckle up.

In addition to seat-belt violations, police kept track of other citations or arrests during the same time period, including child restraint citations (17), drunken-driving arrests (9), drug arrests (1), speeding citations (44), traffic control citations (18), fugitives apprehended (6) and other citations (150).

“On average, 95 percent of Durango drivers wear their seat belts,” said Durango police officer Ron Wysocki.

The statewide average is 81 percent, he said.

Seat belts reduce the risk of fatal injury by 45 percent for front-seat passengers in a car and 60 percent for occupants in an SUV, van, truck and pickup, according to the release.

In 2009, 53 percent of fatally injured passengers were not wearing seat belts.
