9-R may alter graduation rules for current Durango High School students

Electives most likely area for first changes
Snowberger

Even though the Durango School District 9-R school board is still debating math, world language and elective requirements for the Class of 2021, it has learned some things during its review that it may want to start instituting now.

“We can continue conversations like we’ve had tonight, and never land,” 9-R Superintendent Dan Snowberger told the board at its work session Tuesday night about long decision process. “There are four more classes to go through until that class graduates, and we have to decide if we’re going to let them go through with a design we know doesn’t work. The changes don’t have to be all or nothing.”

Speech has already been eliminated from the requirements as of the next school year, as it’s already embedded in numerous other classes, Snowberger said.

The board seemed poised to consider beginning the change by adding more flexibility into the elective requirements. Students are currently required to have one and a half credits of career or technical education electives. That may need to go away, or the definition of a career or technical elective may change, he said.

“If you’re going into music, band is a CTE (career or technical elective) requirement,” Snowberger said.
