100 years ago: “Oscar Anderson, of the Animas Valley, was in town with a load of apples and potatoes for the local markets.”

75 years ago: “Contributions of $1 each have been made by 40 Durango business firms toward defraying expenses of the Hallowe’en carnival at Smiley Junior High. Feature of the carnival will be a shivery spook house.”

50 years ago: “Dr. Robert Delaney, director of the Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College, has announced the recent acquisition by the center of four original William Henry Jackson photographs taken during the 1880s in the San Juan Mountain area of Colorado. The four photographs were originally commissioned by Otto Mears, the so-called Pathfinder of the San Juans. Mears gave the prints to Col. Dave Day for hanging in the office of the Solid Muldoon, the famous newspaper of the day in Ouray.

25 years ago: “Barbara Walker of Ignacio High School is one of 17 home economics educators from across the state selected to participate in a statewide speakers’ bureau. The effort will focus on teen pregnancy and substance abuse and how home economics classes such as life management, relationships and parenting can help students cope with these problems.”
