And the West is History

100 years ago: “The new railroad station at Falfa is a great improvement over the old one and if the moon is shining a farmer can locate it without the aid of a lantern.”

75 years ago: “The Bert Thompsons and the Merl Pittmans have taken over the old Pingrey place in north Durango, where Russell Smith for a time operated a chicken and egg establishment. Their intentions are not to do any chicken raising, but merely to live in peace and amity on the banks of the gurgling Junction.”

50 years ago: “Dr. Schuyler C. Parker, who retired as Durango’s postmaster, was guest of honor of nearly 140 friends at the Strater Gold Room. They entertained, and they told stories, and presented mementoes of the occasion, including a Post Office department citation presented by Regional Transportation Director Jack Glidden.”

25 years ago: “Another gray, dripping morning didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of residents who have been longing for precipitation. ... A foot of snow fell at Purgatory, 16 inches at Silverton and more than 2 feet on Wolf Creek Pass and three-quarters of an inch of rain in Durango.”
