And the West is History

100 years ago: The following advertisement appeared in the classified section: “Lost –Valuable miners pick and shovel pin with gold nuggets. Reward at Gem Theatre.”

75 years ago: “Last night’s heavy rain was accompanied by an electric storm which temporarily interrupted Durango’s street lighting service. A ‘direct hit’ by lightening somewhere in the local circuit blew out a transformer.”

50 years ago: “Fort Lewis College students took it into their own hands to reinforce the action of the administration in dropping the long-disliked ‘A&M’ from the college name. Most of the resident student body, and especially freshmen, were busy on the hillside opposite the campus obliterating the ‘A’ that had been placed there in white washed stones several years ago when the new campus was occupied.”

25 years ago: “Dress at Durango High School made the headlines last spring when Principal Bobby Wright told school board members that students were coming to school with ripped jeans that exposed various parts of their bodies, including thighs and parts of their buttocks. The phenomenon was examined by members of the Student Council and school administrators to determine if wearing holey jeans was appropriate. Wright said that the fad is not anywhere as severe as it was last year.”
