And the West is History

100 years ago: “George E. Wertin, who has been hunting in the Cascade county recently came down to the city to get some more ammunition.”

75 years ago: “William H. Fredinburg pleaded guilty to a forgery charge and was sentenced to serve from six to 10 years in the state prison.”

50 years ago: The following appeared in the section called The Hilltopper: “Well, school at Fort Lewis is under way now for sure; freshman initiation is over – everyone participated in the fun, from the boys wearing dresses to the girls selling tissue paper on Main Avenue.”

25 years ago: “Landowners who lost a court battle to stop construction of a gasoline compressor and water-injunction facility east of Bayfield said they will stop a lawsuit seeking judicial review of the facility permit process. The rural Bayfield landowners claimed that La Plata County Planning Commission and county commissioners improperly granted a land-use permit for the $6 million facility, which will be built in a pasture within sight of neighbors who chose their homes for their rural isolation.”
