And the West is History

From January 1966: “The Durango High School library has popped its seams, and the overflow of books and periodicals had to go someplace, so they went into this cubicle, which formerly was the office of Mrs. Carl Bell, one of the high school secretaries.”

100 years ago: From the Ignacio Chieftain: “The new rural mail route of Ignacio east through the Spring Creek section, via Tiffany and back, will now probably soon be established. Melvin Walker has secured 85 subscribers to the proposed route, whereas only 75 are required.”

75 years ago: “High jinx for the Durango Elks, their ladies and guests, as they will spend a weekend of novel entertainment for those who gather for a Hill Billy party. Gingham dresses and blue jeans will prevail, and party manners will be left behind while everybody unites in the common cause of having a gay time.”

50 years ago: “Preliminary data indicates a winter trimester enrollment at Fort Lewis College of 1,280 students.”

25 years ago: “Intoxicated subjects arguing in the parking lot of City Market reported at 11 p.m. Male, 25, taken to detox.”
