And the West is History

100 years ago: This appeared in the section called High School Notes: “The city schools will have a two-day holiday Thursday and Friday on account of Thanksgiving happening on Thursday. A good many of the pupils who live out of town will spend the holidays at home.”

75 years ago: “At a ceremony to be held the cornerstone of the new Sacred Heart Church will be laid – the initial step in the above-ground church construction. In the cornerstone will be placed a copper box, containing a copy of this issue of the Herald-Democrat, a history of the church in Durango, names of the people whose donations made its erection possible, some coins, and possibly some other things.”

50 years ago: “In a continuing effort to improve and expand the recreational facilities in Durango, the city council authorized the construction of a new children’s ski tow at the Third Avenue ski area and agreed to work with Fort Lewis College on an ice skating rink that would be open for public use.”

25 years ago: “The Bayfield Educational Support Team received a $15,000 challenge grant to construct an integrated playground at the Bayfield Elementary School. The playground will be designed to accommodate the handicapped.”
