And the West is History

100 years ago: “Butter prices showed an increase of two cents over last week, the quotations being 27 cents. The week’s butter production at the San Juan Creamery was 2,500 pounds.”

75 years ago: “Tuesday Literary Club held its first meeting of the year when members convened at the home of Mrs. D.M. Wyman. Under a general club study topic ‘Women of the Day,’ Mrs. A.C. Ruland reviewed an interesting current book outlining the fascinating life of an air stewardess.”

50 years ago: “The city has seal-coated the parking area at the bottom of the Third Avenue ski hill, widened it and cut drainage ditches to alleviate a mud problem which has plagued spectators and skiers for years. The little white house, from which Colton Chapman has sold tow tickets at the foot of the hill, was moved to the top of the hill where an observer can sit and check on the safety of skiers all over the hill. Tickets will be sold inside Chapman house in a booth provided for the purpose.”

25 years ago: “Jim Federico, acting superintendent for the 9-R school district, tried to smooth some feathers ruffled over the prospect of the district purchasing the La Plata County Fairgrounds – and possibly the 55 Plus Center – for a new school site. Federico spoke to about 80 senior center members and employees about the district’s search for a site appropriate for a new middle school. ... Federico said his office has received 101 letters advocating that the center stay in its current location at 2400 Main Ave.”
