And the West is History

100 years ago: “Harrish Ingraham received a second telegram from his actress friend in New York, from whom he had word that his act, written for her, had closed indefinitely and that she needed money at once. The second wire advised him that the first message was sent April 1. Ingraham, on reflecting, noticed that the first message was sent from an $8-a-day hotel – and got wise.”

75 years ago: “Seashells from the beach at Lido, Venice, marked the places of guests at dinner and also made coveted souvenirs of an unusually delightful party when Misses Josephine and Alma Leonardelli entertained. Guests arrived to find a table laden as customary on a shipboard and with the able guidance of their hostesses were taken on a European tour.”

50 years ago: “Home Economics is much more than cookin’ and sewin’ in this day and age. Home-ec students are taught in such wide-and-carried areas as housing-ad home furnishing; home nursing and safety; management of the time, energy and money; consumer economics; preparation for the world of work; foods and nutrition; child development; family living and clothing and textiles.”

25 years ago: “Work on Durango’s tailings removal project resumed for a fourth season, and if all goes well, the $26 million cleanup will be complete by late fall. Crews, estimated to peak at 125 people this summer, will fill the Smelter Mountain area where the tailings once stood with backfill. The entire area should be seeded and complete sometime in June.”
