And the West is History

100 years ago: “Fred Mahan, of the La Plata Bar, was down to the city on a business trip and to lay in ranch supplies for the cold fall nights.”

75 years ago: “30 acres of the old Lime Creek burn between Durango and Silverton will be reforested by a project. 10,000 lodge pole pine and 11,000 Englemann Spruce will be planted in the 30 acre area.”

50 years ago: “It took the combined efforts of nine cars from the state patrol, sheriff’s office, Pagosa Springs police and Durango police to end a high-speed chase which started in Pagosa Springs and ended on College Heights road at 10 p.m. Monday night. It also took a warning shot and a flying tackle to bring Robert Glenn Bogner, 21, of Littleton under control. The high speed chase, which endangered traffic for 62 miles, began after 8 p.m., when Pagosa Springs Policeman Charles Aragon attempted to stop the youth because his car had only one headlight.”

25 years ago: “By the first of next year, partyline telephone customers whose numbers have a Durango prefix should be able to get private-line service. The upgraded service is part of a $11.7 million rural improvement project for Southwest Colorado. Durango’s phase of the operation, which is expected to cost $4.5 million, is scheduled to be finished by the end of January.”
