Anne Hathaway hasn’t gone anywhere

Actress may not be in spotlight, but she’s making movies
Hathaway

A little more than a year ago, it seemed like you couldn’t escape the former movie princess Anne Hathaway with her sweeping Best Supporting Actress with her standout role in the musical “Les Misérables” and the year before that portraying the latest screen version of Catwoman in “The Dark Knight Rises.” But since the final night of her reign on Oscar night, the movie star seems to have been missing in action. Where did she disappear off to so quickly after her big win? A vacation? Some more time for her marriage to Adam Shulman?

The actress was not even around this awards season like most recent winners, save for presenting at the Academy Awards. Turns out Hathaway never really went away but was just working on her four films being released this year: one indie drama (“Song One”), an indie comedy (“Don Peyote”), a family sequel (“Rio 2”) and a sci-fi epic (“Interstellar”).

The multitalented performer first became familiar on screen with younger audiences as the protagonists of the short-lived teen series “Get Real” and the Disney adaptation of “The Princess Diaries” before graduating to more grown-up material with “Havoc” and “Brokeback Mountain” in 2005. Since then, Hathaway has maintained steady popularity in family-friendly movies and more mature films such as “Ella Enchanted,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Rachel Getting Married” and “Love & Other Drugs.” Rachel even earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination. For a musical theater-trained thespian (with stage credits including “Once Upon a Mattress” and “Carnival” to much acclaim), it is hard to believe Hathaway’s first movie musical would be “Les Misérables” a decade later.

There was a small bit of attention on the fact that Hathaway not only cut off all her hair for her Oscar-winning role of Fantine but also lost a substantial amount of weight for the character. She would spend a lot of her press tour cautioning against losing weight that quickly for regular weight loss. This year looks to be a less hectic year for Hathaway, with “Song One” premiering in January at the Sundance Film Festival, where she and the rest of the cast supported the film, and also “Rio 2,” for which she contributed her voice for a second time. Goofy weed comedy “Don Peyote” is set for a summer release. Hathaway’s second collaboration with “Dark Knight” director Christopher Nolan, “Interstellar,” will be out in November. The blockbuster is one of the most anticipated films of year with an all-star cast with Hathaway as one of the leads.

Fifteen months after taking home an Academy Award, it is not a bad place to be for Hathaway or any other actor.
