DAC announces microgrant winners

The Durango Arts Center recently announced the 10 recipients of its inaugural Microgrant program, which aims to support local artists’ with small grants.

Winners of $250 grants are Dan Groth, Daniel Hinds, Chris Warren and Crystal Hartman. Winners of $500 grants include Lorna Meaden, Scott Dye, Tori Williams and Bacon. And taking home the $1,000 grants are Chandler Wigton and Minna Jain.

The recipients will use the grants for projects like watercolor painting, creating greeting cards and purchasing a potter’s wheel. They will also receive a one-year membership to DAC.

Brass festival to come to Silverton this weekend

The 32nd Annual Great Western Rocky Mountain Brass Band Festival will take place Friday through Sunday in Silverton.

The festival draws musicians from all over the country. The festival band, conducted by Paul Mayberry, will give several free performances in the Silverton School Gym, 1160 Snowden St. Concerts will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, and at noon Saturday and Sunday. The music will include overtures, serenades, marches and more.

Sendero seeks images for calendar contest

Sendero Gallery is seeking images of artwork for inclusion in the inaugural Durango Arts Calendar Contest.

The contest will select 12 images to feature in the 2015 Durango Arts Calendar. One image will also be picked for the cover photo. The contest is accepting images of artwork in all media.

The deadline for submissions is Aug. 31. Winners will be announced at a reception and calendar unveiling reception Sept. 18. The calendars will be sold at Sendero and the Durango Arts Center.

Peggy Zemach joins STEAM Park project

Peggy Zemach has joined the STEAM Park project as the fourth co-chairwoman on the project committee. She joins Carol Salomon, Terry Bacon and Terry Swan.

Zemach recently stepped down as the executive director of the Durango Arts Center. She also has worked as executive director of the Durango Children’s Museum and was a founder of the Durango Discovery Museum.

The STEAM Park project is exploring the concept of developing a riverfront community venue for activities, programs and performances in the areas of science, theater, education, art and music. For more information, visit www.durangosteampark.org.

Volunteers needed for arts festival

Organizers of the 20th annual Durango Autumn Arts Festival are seeking volunteers to work this year’s event.

The festival will take place Sept. 20 and 21 on East Second Avenue. Volunteers are needed to work Saturday morning set-up, Sunday afternoon break-down, the information booth, creation station and more. Volunteers will receive an arts festival T-shirt.
