Bayfield, Ignacio hit the diamond

After beating Meeker 12-1 on Friday to start the Buena Vista High School tournament, Bayfield scored another commanding victory on Saturday.

Playing Monte Vista, the Wolverines had 16 base hits to score a 16-3 win over the Pirates. Buena Vista, however, beat Bayfield in the finale, 2-1.

Lance Mazur had three base hits and scored four runs for BHS against Monte Vista. Nic Twedt, Caden Wood, Jackson Queen and Danta Candelaria all scored two runs while Noah Chamblee, Micah Cornelia, Austin Wilmer and Tavian Box all scored one.

Wood struck out eight while walking one and giving up two hits to get the win.

Against Buena Vista, the Demons scored first in the second inning, but Box scored in the third for Bayfield to tie the game, 1-1. The game stayed tied until the seventh when the Demons scored the game winner.

Mazur pitched the first six innings, striking out nine, walking one and giving three hits. Queen pitched the seventh and took the loss, striking out one while also walking one and giving up a base hit.

Bayfield is now 7-3 overall, while BVHS improved to 6-1.

Ignacio comes up short in Del Norte

The Ignacio baseball team traveled to Del Norte on Saturday for a league doubleheader with the Tigers. Ignacio, however, fell 2-1 and then 11-8.

Game 1 of the doubleheader was scoreless for the first three innings, but Del Norte plated one in the fourth.

In the top of the sixth, Rylan Maez brought home Phillip Quintana to tie the game. Del Norte, however, scored in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead and eventually win the game.

Eppie Quintana threw all six innings for Ignacio and only gave up two hits and two runs, both unearned, while striking out four and walking one.

In Game 2, Ignacio jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first. Del Norte took the lead with three runs in the second and two in third. Ignacio then took the lead back with a run in bottom of the third and three in the fourth. Del Norte, however, exploded for six runs in the fifth to win the game.

Rylan Maez hit two doubles, drove in three runs and scored one for Ignacio. Eppie Quintana, Marcus Maez and Phillip Quintana scored two runs each while Devante Montoya also touched home safely.

IHS slid to 2-2 overall after the losses while Del Norte improved to 4-0.
