Bayfield’s Bauer caps prep volleyball career on All-State team

All-State volleyball lists questionable

Volleyballs have returned to duffel bags after another hard-fought high school season.

State championships were awarded, leaving only All-State selections to be handed out.

Headlining the La Plata County award winners was Bayfield senior Emily Bauer, who was named to the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 3A Second Team as an outside hitter. Bauer, who actually was a libero, led the Wolverines with 413 digs, and she also had 30 service aces.

“She’s an All-State libero, no question,” BHS head coach Terene Foutz said. “She’s worked so hard the last two years transitioning to that position and reinventing herself. She was incredibly reliable and brought a calming presence to the team.”

Bayfield senior outside hitter Maddi Foutz earned an honorable mention. It was a shocking designation for the two-time Intermountain League Player of the Year who had 395 digs, 245 kills, 55 aces and 28 blocks.

Coach Foutz also was a bit surprised Megan Farrah of Pagosa Springs was limited to the second team. Maddi Foutz, Faraah and Alamosa’s Shannon Cody were all selected to the Colorado Coaches of Girls Sports All-State team.

Bauer and Foutz were All-Intermountain League First Team selections. Courtney Bayles and Jade Pascale earned Second Team awards, and Kylee McCoy was an honorable mention nominee. Maddi Foutz was the IML Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, and Coach Foutz earned the league’s Coach of the Year award.

Bayfield went 23-4 and reached the state tournament. The team will look for a new head coach next season with the retirement of Terene Foutz, but the Wolverines will return a solid group of players with the ability to get back to state again next season.

Ignacio’s Alex Forsythe earned CHSAA Class 2A Honorable Mention. She led the 7-14 Bobcats with 95 kills, 62 aces and 131 digs.

Durango was shutout of the All-State voting this year after an 11-14 season. But junior Lana Razma was named to the All-Southwestern League First Team after recording a team-high 196 kills, 206 digs and 25 aces.

DHS junior outside hitter Ally Snow also was named to the All-SWL Second Team. She had 145 kills, 168 digs and 16 aces.

Josie Surmeier, a Durango senior, also earned second team honors after recording 118 kills and a team-high 56 blocks. She had 45 digs.
