Best bets for the weekend

Durango Fiesta Days, an annual event since 1935, is your best bet for the weekend. Originally called the Spanish Trails Fiesta, it was renamed the Navajo Trail Fiesta in 1966 and became Durango Fiesta Days in the 1980s.

The rodeo and parade are the longest-running events, and the rodeo is the central tourist attraction of the festival. Fiesta Days remains a peak summer celebration that represents a love for Western culture and reminds participants of a community based in agriculture, once upon a time.

Saturday events include a Fiesta Days train ride to Silverton, a parade on Main Avenue, two rodeo performances, a chuck wagon cook-off and the Fiesta Days queen coronation.

Sunday events include a cowboy church service, pancake breakfast and a final rodeo performance.
