BHS soccer nets 3 wins in 4 games

Girls blank Crested Butte's nascent program
Bayfield's Maddy Duran (6) prepares to volley a ball forward during last season's snowy affair at Telluride. Already with seven total goals in 2016, Duran will lead BHS into action versus THS at 4 p.m. today inside Wolverine Country Stadium.

Put through their first-ever practice on Leap Day (Feb. 29), the expansion-year Crested Butte Community School girls' soccer team continued making sure that its future 3A Southwestern League sisters will know what they'll be in for when CBCS officially becomes a varsity program next spring.

"They will be tough," said Bayfield Head Coach Jen Zelinski, following the Wolverines' 4-0 shutout of the Titans at Wolverine Country Stadium last Saturday-BHS' third victory in four outings so far in 2016. Senior Maddy Duran booked a hat trick offensively, and junior Taylor Morris stopped one goal to give goalkeeper Savannah Kaufmann all the support she'd need.

Duran had scored four goals earlier in a 7-0 road rout of Center beginning the season in SWL action on March 11, a 5-2 non-league loss at 3A Salida on the 12th, and a 3-0 blanking at WCS of SWL'ers Pagosa Springs on the 15th. Morris' goal, meanwhile, doubled her season total to two.

IHS IN ACTION: Traveling Tuesday afternoon to Golden Peaks Stadium, Ignacio fell to Pagosa Springs 10-0. The Pirates mounted an 8-nil halftime advantage before coasting the rest of the way to secure a shutout for freshman keeper Diana Scott.
