BHS wrestlers head to regionals

Wolverines go hard in loss to Moose

Six victories in 14 weights.against-and IN-Alamosa?

Not a bad way at all to wrap up the 3A/2A Intermountain League part of the 2015-16 schedule.

So it went for Bayfield last Friday evening out in the San Luis Valley. Although the Mean Moose somehow held on to win the season's final circuit dual 45-30, clinching the IML title, the Wolverines more than proved their readiness for this weekend's 3A-Region IV Championships in Montrose.

The team is ready particularly in the upper weights. Junior heavyweight Sam Westbrook, senior 195-pounder Wyatt Freier, senior 170-pounder Cash Snooks and junior 160-pounder Macoy Michaeli were all winners by pin. Juniors Cody Speece and Ryan Nava also prevailed by decision at 120 and 145 pounds, respectively, meaning BHS truly earned every single point it scored (conversely, AHS benefited primarily from 30 forfeited points).

Regional action inside MHS' Lloyd McMillan Gymnasium begins at 4 p.m. today and runs through tomorrow, with the top four placers in each weight securing spots in next week's CHSAA Class 3A State Championships inside Denver's Pepsi Center.

Also competing in Montrose will be Denver Sheridan, Olathe, Basalt, New Castle Coal Ridge, Delta, Gypsum Eagle Valley, Parachute Grand Valley, Gunnison, Craig Moffat County, Montezuma-Cortez, Pagosa Springs, Rifle and Steamboat Springs.

2015-16 IML STANDINGS (record; points/points against): 1.Alamosa (4-0; 191/98), 2.La Jara Centauri (3-1; 167/123), 3.Pagosa Springs (2-2; 142/131), 4.BAYFIELD (1-3; 119/176), 5.Monte Vista (0-4; 98/189).
