Both teams make Great 8!

BHS astounds Eaton, IHS cruises to win

The BHS Wolverine basketball boys have had three coaches in three years.

They had an 11-10 season.

They only one won Intermountain League game during the regular season.

They were ranked #28 in the 3A out of 32 teams that made it to this weekend's state playoffs.

They shouldn't be in next weekend's Great 8.

But they are.

While their valley neighbors from Ignacio cruised to yet another 2A regional victory on Saturday, the Bayfield boys had to scrap it out with Eaton, a town near Greeley known for rough basketball play.

Honestly, a lot of fans hadn't expected them to make it out of the district tournament. They won the pigtail game against Monte Vista, then surprised fans by knocking out Centauri the next weekend.

On Friday, they defeated fifth-ranked Pinacle, conference champs with a 15-3 record, 75-54. BHS fans expecting only one game in Denver were shocked.

On Saturday, Bayfield defeated Eaton, 69-61.

On Thursday, the Wolverines will play the Colorado Academy in the first round of state finals at the Colorado School of Mines.

More coverage and previews will be in Friday's edition of the Times.

IGNACIO DOMINATES AGAIN

Once again, the Ignacio Bobcats won their regional title, defeating Paonia 54-29.

All of Ignacio's starters have played in previous 2A Great 8s, but a state title has eluded them since the 1980s.

Could this be the year?
