Evenings Porch announces new hires

Evenings Porch Assisted Living welcomes Janahy Tsosie, Courtney Schlapfer and Larry Benson to its team.

Tsosie has been an in-home caregiver and loves working with the elderly.

Outdoors store opens second location

Backcountry Experience will expand into a second location on Main Avenue, called Crow’s Closet.

The store will open on May 23 at 750 Main Ave., and will cater to Durango’s mountain-casual lifestyle. The 3,500-square-foot apparel store will offer men’s and women’s casual clothing from brands such as Aventura, Sherpani, FjallRaven and Filson. Crow’s Closet will be different from Backcountry Experience in that it will carry only clothing, accessories and gifts. The store manager will be Anna Whalen, who has been with Backcountry Experience since 2010.

The grand opening will feature giveaways and food from local vendors.

Workshop to start a business to be held

The Southwest Colorado Small Business Development Center and First Southwest Bank will sponsor a Starting Your Business workshop from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday in the Durango Public Library Program Room, 1900 East Third Ave.

This course is designed to help people navigate the steps needed to start a successful business. Presenters will include a small-business specialist, marketing expert, small-business banker, an attorney and an accountant. Topics will include business planning, legal structure, taxes, marketing and market research as well as finance options. The cost for the workshop is $25 for the general public or $20 for Chamber of Commerce members.

Bank of San Juans receives award

Bank of the San Juans, a division of Glacier Bank, was honored with the Innovation in Financial Education Award presented by Nasdaq and EverFi.

The award recognizes the bank’s efforts to improve the financial capability of young Americans. Honorees were selected based on a set of criteria that included the scale and reach of their financial-education initiatives, the duration of their commitment and employee-volunteering activities that supplement their programs.

Bank of the San Juans has partnered with EverFi to bring the Financial Foundations program to local students at no cost to schools or taxpayers. The web-based programs use simulations, gaming and adaptive-pathing to bring financial concepts to life.

Bank of the San Juans also offers online adult financial-literacy education through Financial Foundations for Adults. The program is offered free to community members, customers and noncustomers.

College counseling announces addition

Elaine Ehlers, of Durango College Counseling LLC, announces the addition of Barbara McLachlan to her business.

McLachlan has 22 years of teaching experience as well as a certificate in college counseling from UCLA. She will join Ehlers, who has 24 years of advising high-school students with their college applications. Ehlers and McLachlan will help students grades ninth through 12th maneuver through high school and the college-admission process to find their best college fit.

Durango Car Care under new ownership

Durango Car Care, 601 E. College Drive, is under new ownership and management.

Dale Lawson will take over the business from longtime owner Jeff Kennedy, who has retired and moved to Texas. Lawson has lived and worked in Durango for more than 25 years and recently left Durango Autoworks after 12 years. He has knowledge and experience on both domestic and foreign vehicles. Durango Car Care has been completely renovated with all new equipment, lifts and a comfortable customer waiting room.

Payroll Department names grant winners

The Payroll Department announces two grant recipients for the 10.4.2 Grant.

They are the Community Emergency Assistance Coalition and Garden Project of Southwest Colorado. Each has the opportunity to receive up to $10,000 depending on their matching fund efforts. Both organizations will launch local fundraising efforts immediately, and they have until Oct. 4 to raise their matching funds.

The 10.4.2 Grant is a new funding source for the nonprofit sector in Southwest Colorado. Two key, required elements of the grant applications are a match of at least 50 percent of funds awarded and strong evidence of collaboration with other organizations. The 10.4.2 Grant looked at organizations that support efforts in education, environment or human services.

Downtown cleaning event to take place

The iClean My Durango event will take place from 8:45 to 11:30 a.m. May 22.

Participants will receive free coffee, doughnuts and a T-shirt. Participants should meet at the Durango Chamber of Commerce tent located next to Keller Williams at Seventh Street and Main Avenue. The group will clean downtown before the start of the summer tourist season.

Two local companies are named finalists in the 2015 Colorado Companies to Watch Program.

Voormi, based in Pagosa Springs, blends fine micron wool and synthetic fibers for its line of backcountry apparel.

Think Network Technologies, based in Durango, is an IT professional services integrator and value-added hardware and software reseller.

The program is a statewide-awards program that celebrates growing companies that are developing and exporting products and services, creating jobs, enriching communities and creating new industries. Eligible companies must be privately held and headquartered in Colorado, have 6 to 99 full-time equivalent employees and have $750,000 to $50 million in sales or a similar range of working capital.

Risk management examined May 20

Mountain West Insurance and Financial Services will host a seminar on subcontractor and master service agreements from noon to 1 p.m. May 20 at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.

The seminar will address the processes and techniques of risk management through contractual agreements, the specific insurance policies they will affect and why such entities require these agreements along with the definitions of the coverages required.

This seminar will benefit business owners, finance officers, controllers and office managers who manage subcontractor and master-service agreements as well as risk-management programs. RSVP is required.
