Sorrel Sky Gallery announces new hire

Sorrel Sky Gallery announces a new addition to its Durango team. Deborah Sussex will join the gallery as a sales associate.

She recently moved to Durango with her husband from Ely, Minnesota, where she owned and operated a portrait studio for 18 years. Prior to that, she worked as a field instructor and Leave-No-Trace trainer for National Outdoor Leadership School. She has a degree in cultural anthropology from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota. She also is a pastel painter and professional photographer and was recently awarded a residency at Willowtail Springs Nature Preserve and Education Center in Mancos.

Winning government contracts discussed

The Small Business Development Center: Southwest Colorado and Colorado’s Procurement Technical Assistance Center will host a free workshop titled “Developing a Marketing Strategy to Win Government Contracts” from 9 to 11 a.m. July 25 at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

The workshop will be facilitated by PTAC Counselor Kathryn Lobdell. She will explain how to develop a marketing strategy to earn government contracts. The workshop will cover researching a target market, presentation skills and win-win strategies.

Starting a business workshop to be held

The Southwest Colorado Small Business Development Center and First Southwest Bank will sponsor a workshop titled “Starting Your Business” from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Durango Public Library Program Room, 1900 East Third Ave.

This course is designed to help people navigate the steps needed to start a successful business. Presenters include a small-business specialist, marketing expert, small-business banker, an attorney and an accountant. Topics will include: Business planning, legal structure, taxes, marketing and market research and finance options. The fee is $25 or $20 for Chamber of Commerce members.

Women’s small-business conference to be held

The Colorado Small Business Development Center Network will host the fifth annual Southwest Colorado Women’s Small Business Conference from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. July 24 at Fort Lewis College.

This event features training sessions, one-on-one consulting, local resources for female entrepreneurs and networking. Roxane White, chief of staff to Gov. John Hickenlooper, will be the keynote speaker. She will discuss how she learned to “lean-in” and successfully climb the ladder to become Hickenlooper’s “right-hand man.”

This conference is offered annually in Durango to help increase the sustainability and success of women-owned businesses. The cost is $50; scholarships are available.

Soup Palette announces opening

The Soup Palette announces its opening at 555 Rivergate Lane.

The restaurant is owned by Jenni Gross – an artist, designer and home chef. The Soup Palette offers power soups, artisan salads, handcrafted sandwiches, coffee, teas and more. Everything is homemade from fresh and local produce and creatively prepared. It is open from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Digestive Health adds a new physician

Digestive Health Associates, P.C., 2 Burnett Court, announces new physician Dr. Emily K. Ward, who joined the practice after completing her fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver.

She is interested in the interaction between nutrition and gastrointestinal diseases and will focus on improving patients’ health through nutritional, medical and endoscopic treatments. She is experienced in both pediatrics and adult medicine, allowing her to effectively manage older children who have intestinal diseases and are transitioning their care to an adult gastroenterologist.

Ward, a summa cum laude graduate of Eastern Michigan University, completed her medical degree in 2006 at the Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health. She completed a dual residency in pediatrics and internal medicine at the Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus, where she also served as a chief resident in internal medicine. She is board certified in both pediatrics and internal medicine, and she will be board eligible in gastroenterology at the time of her arrival in Durango.

Her interests include pediatric gastroenterology, women’s health issues in gastroenterology and routine and advanced endoscopic procedures, including radio-frequency ablation of Barrett’s esophagus and endoscopic mucosal resection. Ward has experience in performing quality endoscopy through advanced imaging.

CrossFit Catacombs announces new hire

CrossFit Catacombs welcomes the first addition to its coaching staff, Tad Elliott.

The business is bringing him on to develop and run its kids, teens and endurance programs and support group classes periodically. He brings with him experience both in coaching kids and integrating strength and conditioning training for endurance training.

A Durango native and resident his whole life, he grew up with a love of outdoor sports and the skills, heart and desire to compete at the national and international level. A former member of both the U.S. Ski Team and the U.S. Cycling National Team, he has an impressive athletic background, including being a national champion in Nordic skiing four times and in mountain biking two times.

He has been instrumental in developing the business’ new “Durangatangs” summer fitness program for kids. Durangatangs is for kids ages 8 to 15 and all athletic abilities.

Chamber to host Business After Hours

The Durango Chamber of Commerce will host the July Business After Hours from 5 to 7 p.m. July 17 at the Mercy Regional Medical Center Horse Gulch Medical Campus, 810 Third St.

The cost is $7 for members and guests. The event will include tours of the new facilities of Mercy Family Medicine, Centura Centers for Occupational Medicine, Mercy Diagnostic Services, Mercy Integrated Physical Therapy, Mercy Sports Medicine, Pediatric Partners of the Southwest and door prizes.

Chamber to host Lunch & Learn

Durango Chamber of Commerce will host the July Lunch & Learn at noon July 23 at First National Bank of Durango, 259 W. Ninth St.

The topic will be “Internet Solutions for Small Business ... What You Should Know!” presented by Jeff Gavlinski with SkyWerxs. The cost is $10 for chamber members and $20 for nonmembers. Reservations are required.
